Next up on our Greek honeymoon was…Mykonos!!
Known as one of the islands with parties that last all night long, you can expect to never be bored. However, it is also a gorgeous place with beautiful beaches and whitewashed buildings. Each corner you turn will lead you down another picturesque street, lined with bougainvillea trees, cute shops, and colorful doorways.
Getting to Mykonos was a bit tricky. As I mentioned in my Santorini blog post, the ferry system was awful and we ended up getting to the island about 2 hours later than planned. Though the ferry was cheaper, I kind of wished I would’ve spent the extra money and paid for a flight. I think, however, if you were doing more island hopping (so that you don’t have to be on the ferry as long) it would be a lot better. We booked our ferry tickets here.
The ferry from Santorini will take you to the New Port, north of Mykonos Town. To get to our Airbnb in Mykonos Town, we had to walk over to the marina and book tickets to take the water taxi. There are 2 stops, Old Port and Mykonos Town, so make sure you know which one is closer to your accommodation so you know which one to get off at. We then had to walk through Mykonos Town and find our Airbnb, during the hottest time of the day, with ALL of our luggage. There are no cars allowed in town, so if that’s where you are staying, you’ll have to do the same thing. Unfortunately, we didn’t find this out until right before this trip (proof that no matter how much research you do, you’ll still miss an important detail!). It was definitely not fun and we were both drenched in sweat!
However, we did really like our Airbnb. It was right in the middle of town so it was very easy to walk around and explore, plus it was cute. It was also one of the only places I seen in town with a little patio! We quickly discovered it is a popular spot for photos and it was pretty common for people to stop in front of our steps for a picture.
After we made it to our Airbnb, had showers, and relaxed for a bit, we went to a restaurant nearby for an early supper called BuSulas. This might have been our favorite place we ate during our trip, not only because the food was great (highly recommend the pesto tortellini) but because the service was phenomenal. The waiter we had was so nice and brought us out a free little treat after our meal and spent some time talking to us. We actually ended up coming back another night because we liked it so much. It doesn’t have the prettiest views or anything but it had a charming “local” feel so I highly recommend it!
After this we headed to Little Venice to visit the windmills. If you’re wanting photos, come before sunset or first thing in the morning to beat the crowds. We were able to snap some pictures then make our way down to the water before everyone else showed up.
This was one of my favorite evenings in Greece! We grabbed a seat along the water at Breeze Cocktail Bar and watched the sunset. If we had more energy, we probably would’ve bar hopped, but after carrying all of our luggage we just wanted to sit down, drink, and listen to music!
Our next day we slept in a bit then headed to the beach. If you’re staying in Mykonos Town, the best mode of transportation will be taking the bus. There are only about 30 taxis on the island and they spend most of their time running back and forth from the airport. We checked the bus schedule online here. It was very affordable and pretty easy to figure out. You can also rent a scooter, car, or ATV, but as I said before, the driving in Greece is a bit crazy, plus you wouldn’t have anywhere to park if you are staying in town since vehicles aren’t allowed.
I had done some research on the beaches of Mykonos and knew I either wanted to visit Elia, Psarou, or Ornos Beach. Actually, what I REALLY wanted to do was visit one of the beach clubs (either Nammos or Scorpios) but when I e-mailed them, I found out it was over 200 euros just to rent a set of beach chairs for the day!
There was absolutely no way I was paying that, so we ended up at Ornos Beach. I think we paid 40 euros for our chairs and they were in the front row right by the water, so to me it was worth it. We waded in the water a bit (not too deep because it was pretty cold!), sipped on some drinks, and I read almost an entire book. It was a great day of relaxing to recover from the day before!
When we got back, we went to Little Venice again, this time for supper. Unfortunately, we were not a fan of where we ate (blogger fail, shouldn’t have picked a random spot on the water to eat assuming it would be good). The restaurant was called Taverna Sunset and a quick Google search to read the reviews afterwards showed we aren’t the only people not impressed by the food or service. Oh well!
While at supper we had been trying to find somewhere to get our covid tests to get back into the US. We actually had seen signs at a dentist office that stated they offered rapid tests while we were on our way to supper, but assumed they would be closed since it was a Saturday. Surprisingly, on our way back when we passed again, they were open! So, we got our noses swabbed (woo hoo, negative!) and uploaded our results into the VeriFly app. I’m not sure if every airline is using it right now, but we flew with AA and they had me upload everything onto it and check in for all of our flights at the counter instead of doing it online. It was pretty easy!
The next day we were actually supposed to go on a full-day tour to Delos & Rhenia islands, but since we realized how early we had to get up the day after for our flight, we decided to skip the tour and just explore Mykonos Town instead. If you’re interested, this was the tour!
This was honestly my favorite day in Mykonos! We had such a good time just wandering around getting lost in the streets and checking out all the different shops. We even found some souvenirs to take home, such as some Greek coffee and goat-milk soap.
We walked to the port and watched some fishermen clean their catch then walked along the water until we got to Paraportiani Church and stopped for a photo opportunity. Then we sat on the balcony over the water at Kastro’s for some drinks! We had a great time and I was so glad we skipped the tour because we never would’ve gotten to see this much of the town otherwise.
And of course, you can’t leave Greece without trying a gyro!! We looked it up and a place called Saki’s supposedly has the best, and thankfully it was close to our room. They were delicious! We’ve already decided we want to try to make them ourselves at home.
I was so sad this was our last day in Greece 🙁 Our Airbnb host arranged for a taxi to pick us up near the Old Port Bus Station at 4am the next day to take us to the airport. I booked our short flight directly with Olympic Air here. After a longggg day of traveling with 3 different flights, we finally made it home!
Greece has definitely earned its spot as my favorite country. It has always been my dream honeymoon destination and I was so thankful we got to go. Dalton is not big on traveling a ton so the fact he was such a good sport and willing to use almost all of his vacation days for this trip meant so much to me. He even said he would come back to Greece someday! Which is good, because I have a few more islands on my bucket list including Zakynthos, Crete, Paros, Milos, and Naxos!
I hope you’ve all enjoyed my blog posts from my honeymoon! Please let me know if you have any questions or feel free to share your experience! Thank you for reading!
